Project Twin Streams

Community Waitākere has delivered Project Twin Streams along the banks of Te Wai o Pareira since 2006, funded by Auckland Council. It has been a combination of environmental education, creative community engagement, and a range of stream restoration activities including site preparation, enrichment planting, weeding and ongoing maintenance.

The ecological corridors created from the north-western motorway to the Henderson township are almost continuous, and a great example of how communities can be involved in urban restoration. Over the years numerous community groups, individuals and organisations have participated in Project Twin Streams. The focus for community engagement is typically with local primary schools and people with disabilities, providing opportunities for these groups to participate in their local environment.

Community Waitākere operates a small nursery in Te Atatū to support the community need for specialist plants and to provide plants for the planting areas we work in.

As part of this, we regularly engage local groups and schools, focusing on people with disabilities, in the propagation and maintenance of specialist plants, in particular ferns, wetland species and rare natives. The plants they grow are then used to add richness and diversity to a variety of local ecological restoration projects.
