Strengthening Communities report for Tāmaki Makaurau
Recently published, the Strengthening Communities report brought community organisations, groups, local government and funders together. They provided feedback on what ‘good’ looks like in Tāmaki Makaurau and identified milestones for 3 and 6 years. The report also discusses why and how communicating the value of strong communities and community work is important and highlights key challenges to achieving these goals.
What ‘good’ looks like will vary between people, times and places, much like the approach to people-in-place community development. Key themes that emerged for strong communities centered around outcomes for people and their relationships with community organisations, namely:
People having access to the basics and connected to other people,
Support organisations are engaged with their communities,
People are able to make decisions and act locally,
Organisations collaborate with each other,
They are respectful of local people and stakeholders.
The outcome of these key themes would look like thriving people and communities where everyone has options to thrive and “we are on our different waka but rowing towards the same goals.”
